Ammoudi Beach

Would you believe me if I told you I’ve discovered a beach that’s a true hidden treasure? Well, I have.

Ammoudi is located 66km southeast of Agios Nikolaos and 29km east of Ierapetra, right next to the road connecting Makrigialos zu Goudouras.

Its main beach is also known as Spilia Drakou (Dragon’s Cave), named after a large cave 500m north of the beach and the tavern with the same name beside it.

There are two more secluded coves west of Dragon’s Cave beach, both accessible on foot or via a dirt track.

I was amazed by the stunning fine golden sand and the clear blue waters.

The beaches aren’t easily seen from the road.

To find the beach, you have to stop when you see the Dragon’s Cave tavern and walk a small path towards the sea for about three minutes.

The area feels peaceful and is ideal for families.

This isn’t suitable for naturism because many locals know this place and come daily with their families.

You could, however, walk to the next small coves on the west, which are more secluded.

The beaches are surrounded by high cliffs and smooth white rocks of limestone, and the seabed is sandy.

If you don’t have a car, you could get the bus connecting Ierapetra with Goudouras, but note that the routes aren’t frequent.

Make sure you know the exact schedules before heading here.

There’s healthful clay you can break off from the cliff, mix with water, and apply to your skin to dry as a natural spa.
