Would you believe me if I told you that I discovered one of Crete’s most tranquil coastal gems?
Goudouras is a seaside village I stumbled upon during my travels in eastern Crete.
Located 37km east of Ierapetra and 73km southeast of Agios Nikolaos, it’s nestled in a vast valley surrounded by rugged mountains and deep canyons.
The village actually consists of two united settlements, Asprolithos and Goudouras.
Its name comes from Cape Goudouras, once known as the ancient Cape Erythrae.
Interestingly, “Goudouras” is derived from the local plant “agoudouros” (Hypericum triquetrifolium), which thrives in the area and was traditionally used for drying fruit like figs and raisins.
The warm climate here is ideal for growing olives and vegetables in greenhouses.
While these greenhouses have changed the natural scenery a bit, the village remains charming.
When I visited Goudouras, I was struck by how peaceful it was, even in August.
The village has seen very mild tourist development, so it’s a quiet destination perfect for relaxation.
Along the seaside road stretches a large pebbly beach with clear, cool water.
It’s not overly organized, but you’ll find some spots with umbrellas and taverns nearby.

If you make your way here, I suggest visiting the nearby Votsalaki beach, a beautiful spot just to the west.
Getting to Goudouras is straightforward—just follow the road from Ierapetra to Makrigialos, then turn towards Goudouras.
There are also bus services from Ierapetra if you prefer public transport.

From these cities, you can reach Goudouras by renting a car or using taxi services.
