Livari Beach

You know, sometimes you find a place so remote and peaceful that it feels like stepping into another world.

That’s exactly how I felt when I visited Livari Beach in East Crete.

Livari is located 90km southeast of Agios Nikolaos e 7km east of Goudouras, in one of the most remote areas of Crete where you’ll likely be alone.

About 2km to the east, there’s the power plant of Atherinolakkos, which is the only drawback in the landscape.

At Livari, there are actually two pebbly beaches and several smaller coves, ideal for privacy e naturism.

You don’t have to worry too much about the lack of shade, as you can find shelter under the few tamarisk trees of the east Livari beach.

Swimming here is an amazing experience, while enjoying the views of the surrounding wilderness with the bare mountains, steep canyons, and the exotic island of Koufonissi.

Apart from the main beach of Livari that you’ll encounter first, you can drive west, cross a small cluster of 3-4 cottages, and reach the long east beach of Vlyhada.

“Vlyhada” means a place with brackish water, named after a spring with fresh water that flows all year round.

There’s a dirt road running along the beach, which is surrounded by tall reddish walls.

Getting here is part of the adventure. From Goudouras, take the road that leads to the power station of Atherinolakkos. After 4km, you’ll meet a junction where the right road takes you into the factory and the local fishing lodge.

Don’t follow this track; instead, continue driving straight to the village of Agia Triada for another 1km until you meet a junction on the right-hand side that leads to Livari Beach.

The road is initially paved but later turns into a passable dirt track.

Livari is truly a haven for those seeking solitude and natural beauty.

While you’re in the area, don’t forget to explore other Spiagge di Lassithi.
