Imagine a place where tomatoes are so important, they have tomato wars.
Yes, you heard that right!
Welcome to Gra Ligia, the seaside village that’s changing the game in Cretan tourism.
Located just 5km west of Ierapetra en 39km south of Agios Nikolaos, Gra Ligia is a hidden treasure on the southern coast of Crete.
As I walked through the village, I was struck by the contrast between traditional Cretan life and modern agriculture.
The valley behind Gra Ligia is a sea of greenhouses, filled with early vegetables.
It’s so impressive that locals jokingly call it the “Silicon Valley of Greece“.
But Gra Ligia isn’t just about agriculture.
The village has a beautiful, long beach with coarse sand that stretches all the way from Ierapetra to Stomio.
I spent hours walking along this beach, feeling the warm sand between my toes and watching local fishermen with their boats.
What really caught my eye was the Bramiana dam, just 2km north of the village.
This dam not only supplies water to all the crops in Ierapetra but has also become one of the most important wetlands in Crete.
It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise!
Gra Ligia has managed to balance agriculture and tourism perfectly.
It’s one of the newest resorts in Crete, but it hasn’t lost its local charm.

The beach is well organized with umbrellas and showers, but it’s not overcrowded like some of the more famous beaches.
One of the coolest things I experienced was the “xentomatiasmata” or tomato war.
It’s a revived custom that happens in early summer.
Imagine a beach full of people throwing tomatoes at each other it’s messy, fun, and totally unforgettable!
