International air arrivals in Greece have soared significantly in 2024, with 22.6 million arrivals recorded in the January-September period, marking a 7.9% increase from the previous nine months. This growth translates to 1.6 million additional air arrivals.

Quarterly Breakdown

• First Quarter (January-March): The year began with a strong growth of 25.3%, with 485,000 international arrivals in January alone.
• Second Quarter (April-June): This period saw milder growth, starting with 5.6% in April with 1.4 million international arrivals, and 12.7% in May with 2.9 million arrivals. June recorded 3.8 million arrivals, an increase of 5.6%.
• Third Quarter (July-September): The smallest increase for 2024 was seen in July with 5.3% și 4.6 million international air arrivals. August saw 4.5 million arrivals with an accelerated growth of 7.4%. September’s growth slowed down to 7.1% cu 3.7 million arrivals.

• Creta led the increase, with 4.8 million international air arrivals, up 6.5%.
• Dodecanese Islands recorded 4 million arrivals, an increase of 9.7%.

• Peloponnese had an 11.8% increase.
• Cyclades were the exception, recording a marginal decrease of -0.8% cu 1.2 million international air arrivals.

• 10.3 million international road arrivals were recorded, showing a 14.5% increase from 9.0 million in the corresponding period of 2023.

Revenue Trends

• Travel Receipts in August 2024 showed a 1.8% decrease, reaching 4.25 billion euros compared to 4.32 billion euros in 2023.
• The eight-month period saw a 3.2% increase in travel receipts, reaching 15.2 billion euros.

General Outlook

• Despite concerns over revenue trends, the tourism market remains optimistic about a larger tourism basket by the end of 2024 compared to 2023, which reached 20.5 billion euros, with estimates suggesting it could exceed 22 billion euros.

Spending

In the first half of 2024, travel receipts grew by 12.2%, reaching €6,921 million.

• Germany: Visitors from Germany spent €1,223 million, marking a 7.4% increase.
• United Kingdom: Tourists from the UK contributed €1,009 million, reflecting a significant 19.9% increase.
• United States: Receipts from American travelers saw a modest growth of 1.0%, totaling €540 million.
