Okay, beach lovers, I’m about to let you in on a Cretan secret that’ll make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a beekeeper’s paradise.

A bay so calm and sheltered, even the ancient Venetians used it as a safe harbor.

Welcome to Fraskia of Panagia located just 24km northwest of Heraklion.

As I stood there, taking in the view, the scent of thyme and wild herbs filled the air.

It’s no wonder this place got its name from the Cretan word “fraski” a type of jar used as a beehive.

The bay sits at the exit of a small valley, right next to the private settlement of Theseus.

But don’t let that put you off there’s plenty of coastline to explore.

Imagine a long stretch of shore dotted with small coves, alternating between sandy patches and rocky seabeds.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, head south to the area called “The Garden of Priest“.

There, you’ll find some amazing caves that’ll make you feel like a modern day explorer.

One of the best things about Fraskia?

The sea is usually as calm as a millpond.

It only gets choppy with eastern winds, which are pretty rare in north Crete.

No wonder boat owners from Heraklion love to anchor here when the northwest winds blow.

Getting to Fraskia is part of the adventure.

Most people come by boat, but if you’re up for a challenge, there’s a tricky path from the Heraklion Rethymnon highway.

There’s also a shorter, easier path from Theseus beach, but it’s on private property.

In recent years, some thoughtless locals have built stuff they shouldn’t have, leaving behind cement bases and rubbish.

It’s a real shame, but don’t let it put you off there’s still plenty of natural beauty to enjoy.

The beach gets its name from the Panagia (Virgin Mary) monastery that once stood here.

Only some ruined walls and a shrine remain now, but it’s still a special place.

Every year, locals from Rogdia and Achlada villages come by boat to celebrate.
