Fodele Beach is about to become your new favorite Cretan destination.
Located just 26km northwest of ΠΡΠ°ΠΊΠ»ΠΈΠΎΠ½, Fodele Beach offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and modern amenities.
As I stepped onto its golden sands, I couldn’t help but feel a connection to the great painter El Greco, who was born in the nearby village.

The beach stretches along the exit of the Pantomantris River, creating a unique landscape where fresh water meets the sea.

On one side, you’ll find a well organized beach with all the comforts you could ask for.
On the other, a more secluded area perfect for those seeking tranquility.
During my visit, I was struck by the contrast between the lively western part of the beach and the quieter eastern section.
The western area buzzes with activity, offering umbrellas, sun beds, and water sports.

Meanwhile, the eastern part near the gas station provides a more laid back vibe, though it’s worth noting it can get windy.
One of the highlights of my trip was exploring the surrounding area.
The nearby village of Fodele, believed to be El Greco’s birthplace, is a must visit.
Its narrow streets and traditional tavernas offer a glimpse into authentic Cretan life.
Don’t miss the El Greco Museum, housed in what’s thought to be the artist’s childhood home.

Fodele Beach and its surrounding area are steeped in history.
The nearby village of Fodele is believed to be the birthplace of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco, one of the most famous painters of the Spanish Renaissance.
The area was also home to the ancient city of Pantomatri, traces of which can still be seen today.
The old fort of Kastelos, whose ruins sit atop the hill overlooking the beach, adds another layer of historical intrigue to the area.
