Hold onto your sunhats, folks! I’m about to bust a major Cretan beach myth wide open.

You know how everyone says all the good beaches in Crete are in the middle of nowhere?

Well, I’ve got news for you it’s not true!

Let me introduce you to Пляж Хелидони, also known as Porto Helidoni.

This little slice of paradise is just a hop, skip, and a 5 minute drive from Ираклион.

Tucked away near the historic Paliokastro fort by Rogdia, Helidoni is proof that you don’t need to trek to the ends of the earth for a beautiful beach day.

Getting there is a breeze. Just head south from Paliokastro, and you’ll find yourself at the top of a wooden staircase leading down to sea level.

The first thing that hit me when I arrived was how clean the beach was.

The water clarity? It could give those famous southern Crete beaches a run for their money!

Helidoni faces east, which means it’s usually as calm as a millpond perfect for a relaxing swim.

The beach itself is tiny but mighty, with a mix of fine pebbles and patches of sand.

If you’re into snorkeling, you’re in for a treat. The rocky sea bottom is like an underwater playground.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering about the name Helidoni means “swallow” in Greek.

Every year, these little birds flock to the area, giving the beach its name.

Helidoni Beach is small but perfectly formed.

To reach Helidoni Beach from Heraklion, head west towards Rogdia.

Look for signs to Paliokastro fort.

Just south of the fort, you’ll find the parking area for Helidoni Beach.

Follow the wooden staircase down to the beach.

While there’s no direct public transport to the beach, you can take a bus to Rogdia and walk from there.

• Ретимнон: About 80 km (50 miles), 1 hour 15 minutes drive

• Агиос Николаос: Approximately 70 km (43 miles), 1 hour drive
