Gournia sits on the outskirts of Pigaidakia village, sandwiched between Vathi beach and the craggy Sideropetra area. 

It’s on the route connecting Matala with Vathi, but don’t expect a smooth drive – this place is all about the journey. 

The trek from the mainland is no walk in the park. It’s a challenging hike with zero shade, so bring your A-game and plenty of water.

Gournia boasts five consecutive narrow, rocky bays formed where deep streams meet the sea. 

These mini-fjords are a sight to behold, complete with natural pools that give the area its name (Gournia means “troughs” in Greek). 

Now, here’s the real gem – in the largest fjord, depending on winter rains, a tiny beach sometimes appears. 

This little slice of paradise was only recently discovered, photographed in May 2020 by some eagle-eyed locals.
