Let me tell you something different about the beaches in Crete.
While everyone heads to the popular sandy shores, I found a place that’s special in its own way. It’s called Plakaki, and it changed how I think about beach experiences.
During my latest visit to the Karavopetra area in southwest Crete, I spent time at Plakaki, one of several coves that make up this coastal section.
It’s the first cove you’ll see when coming from Paleochora, sitting between large rocks that create a natural shelter from the wind.
The great thing? It’s right next to the main road connecting Paleochora to Krios beach.

Like many Chania Beaches, this one has its own personality.
The fine pebbles and clear water make it different from your usual beach experience.

When I first walked onto Plakaki, I noticed how the fine pebbles felt under my feet – different from sand but comfortable once you get used to it.
The sea is blue and mostly calm thanks to those big rocks around it. It’s perfect for swimming because the depth increases gradually.

You’ll find basic amenities near the beach.
During my visits, I’ve seen several small shops where you can buy water and snacks.
There are also bathrooms available at nearby businesses.

I stayed at one of the small rooms near the beach.
They’re simple but clean and comfortable. If you want more options, check out nearby Grammeno beach area or Paleochora town.
The water here is amazing for snorkeling – I spent hours watching fish swim between rocks.
It’s also good for spearfishing, if you’re into that.
Swimming is safe and enjoyable because the water is usually calm.

When I got hungry, I tried the local tavernas.
They serve fresh fish and traditional Greek food. The prices are fair, and the portions are big. More restaurants are available at Grammeno beach.

From my experience, this beach works best for:
– People who like quiet places
– Snorkeling fans
– Naturists (it’s clothing optional)
– Couples looking for privacy
– Photographers who like natural settings
Getting to Plakaki is easy – just follow the paved road from Paleochora toward Koundoura.
Watch for the rocky coves before Grammeno beach.
The distances from major cities in Crete to Plakaki beach:
Note: Public buses (KTEL) run from Chania to Paleochora regularly, and from there you can take a local bus or taxi to Plakaki.
The road conditions are generally good, with the main highways being well-maintained.
For current bus schedules and public transport options, check the Chania Municipality website.
